Dr. Nakinda said that the global FP2020 goal is to mobilize global policy, financing, commodity and service delivery commitments to support the rights of an additional 120,000,000 women and girls in the world’s poorest countries to use contraceptive information, services and supplies without coercion and discrimination by 2020. She also noted that Uganda’s vision is universal access to FP to help Uganda attain the middle-income country status by 2020.
A young couple seeking family planning services |
Partners agreed on the following methods to achieve better FP Programming for young people
• Package
SRH messages in the context of “love”, “sex” and “relationship” formats.
• Integrate SRH -
body changes, gender, culture, sexuality, contraceptives, HIV/AIDS has
increased contraceptive uptake into school curriculum
• Use
of photographic competitions that enable young people to state their opinions
through photographs of objects or related events which reflect their voices
• Use
of costumes characters is an innovative way of promoting FP methods especially
condoms, pills
• The
words/phrases Contraceptives and family planning
sound so technical to the young people. There is need to simplify them
• There
is need for light conversation starters related to body changes, menstruation
and then link them to birth control.
• Focus
on boys and men to ensure that they are part of interventions
• Segment
messages to address issues that young people are going through at a particular
time/ phase.
• Use
of traditional approaches is still relevant for FP especially peer education .
• Equip
health workers with conversation starters that trigger off discussions about
contraception.
• Infuse
light hearted information on love, relationships with SRH messages
• Develop
content in animated form( cartonish Type)
• Place
messages in public places like bus terminals, blogs, magazines
• Innovative
platform to promote discussion on FP. People from different walks of life share
their stories about family planning i.e. FP voices.
• Re-positioning
FP as “Future Planning”/Future protection to increase access to
FP information and services whether they are sexually active or NOT.
